Magnet fishing is a quickly growing past time that many people are starting to discover. We have some recommendations for what you will need to get started in this fun past time.
We have two top pics in this category. Our favorite one sided magnet kit is the King Kong Magnetics Fishing Magnet Kit. This is a 400 LB pull force magnet kit that comes with everything you need to get started. Our favorite two sided magnet kit is the Wukong Kit. The is a 760 LB magnet kit which also comes with a good selection of accessories to get started. We break down what is included and why we love these kits below.
One Sided Kit
The King Kong Kit is a great kit to get started. Included in this kit is the 400 lb pull magnet. This is a neodymium magnet and is really good quality. It is coated in stainless steel. This is essential to the longevity of your magnet as Neodymium rusts very quickly. It has measurements of Diameter = 2.36″ (60mm), height = 2.17″(55mm), Thickness = 0.6″ (15mm) and Weight= 0.73 Lbs (0.33 kg) making it a perfect size transporting and deployment.
This kit also comes with a 65 ft (20 m) 1/4 in (6 mm) thick heavy duty nylon rope. These ropes are some of the strongest available making them ideal for magnet fishing. This particular rope has over 660 lbs (300 kg) of tensile strength which is higher than the pull force of the magnet. This is a great feature as you would not want the rope to break before the magnet released a target.
Another thing we really like about this kit is that it comes with 2 carabiners, compared to just one with most kits. We have used this feature numerous times as it is so much easier to clip one end to the magnet and then the other to fence or post. It also makes it easier to tie around trees or yourself, which is very handy for us as it eliminated the necessity of learning to tie knots. The rope it self comes with pre made knots for the carabiners to clip into! We really liked this as it helped give us more time fishing and less time setting up!
Gloves and thread locker are included as well. This was a huge bonus for us, especially the gloves, as they helped protect our hands from cuts as well as from the slimy gunk at the bottom of the water. The thread locker helps with peace of mind insuring your magnet will not come loose over time.
Double Sided Kit
For the double sided kit we really like the Wukong kit. The magnet has a combined pulling force of 760 lbs (344 kg). Combined means that it is the total of each side, so quick math tells us that each side has a pulling force of 380 lbs (172 kg). This magnet is triple coated to help resist rust. It has measurements of Diameter = 2.36”(60mm), height = 4.3″(110 mm), and a width = 9.8″ (25mm).
This kit also comes with a 66 ft (20m) rope. This rope is a Paracord type rope which is strong for its size. This particular kit’s rope has a tensile strength of 550 Lbs (249 kg). This is one of the features that could be better as we prefer a nylon or poly rope and have these available when we hunt. The rope will work but is smaller than other ropes, a feature that can begin to hurt over a long day of fishing.
It comes with one carabiner which is a good bonus but 2 would be better. We have multiple carabiners available to us so this was not a problem. The gloves were are slip proof but not necessarily cut proof.
As you can probably tell, this double sided kit is not as good as the single sided one, and that seems to be the trend when one goes shopping for kits. My suggestion would be to purchase the single sided kit first and then if you wanted to add the double sided magnet, just buy it separately. You can use your accessories from the single sided kit with a double sided magnet.
